Flintshire

The Policing Service in Flintshire

The county is overseen by Darren Wareing, the county Chief Inspector and two local policing area Inspectors; Paul McKeown covering the North  and Iwan Jones overseeing the South. For more information on crime rates see www.police.uk or the North Wales Performance Summary which provides a monthly summary of policing performance, including on a county level.

In Flintshire at present there are seven police stations: Saltney, Deeside, Flint, Buckley, Holywell, Mostyn and Mold.

Review

Approximately 130 staff are based from the police station in Mold.  This figure includes members of the response and local policing teams as well as staff from CID and other police personnel.  The station has a front counter which is open from 9am to 7pm, seven days per week.

The station in Mold is located near the town centre; however the building is not ideal due to both its age and the cellular construction of the internal space. There are no plans at present to change the arrangements at Mold, however the review recognises that alternative accommodation may need to be considered in the long term for the policing service in Mold. Although these plans are for the longer term we would welcome suggestions from other organisations who are also planning to develop sites in Mold so we can fully explore the possibility of a shared location.

The police station in Buckley currently is base to approximately 19 staff amongst which are the local policing team for the area. The station front counter service is open 9am to 5pm, five days per week.

The space within the station is poorly used and the age of the building means that it is not adaptable to meet the needs of delivering a modern policing service.

We would be looking towards relocating the station to a more suitable location. It is important to note that until a suitable alternative is found the current station in Buckley will remain open. The counter service will continue at the new location.

In terms of relocating the policing service in Buckley we will be looking at several options. To date the preferred option is to include the police service as part of the Flintshire Connects hub within the area. We would like to hear the views of the community on these possible options.

Review

There are currently approximately 30 staff based from the police station in Deeside.  This number includes the local policing team for the area as well as other police personnel.  The station has a front counter service  that is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

The review has found that the building is not wholly fit for purpose and the space is poorly used due to the large size of the building. The location is deemed operationally important, however, due to the age of the building maintenance costs are comparatively high.

Deeside has been identified as requiring further review, although there are no set plans or timelines for when this work will commence.  We would welcome suggestions from the community for potential alternatives. There may be an opportunity in the future of locating the station within the Council-managed regeneration projects and we would welcome feedback on this possibility.

The space within the station is poorly used, and the age of the building means that it is not adaptable to meet the needs of delivering a modern policing service.

The current station in Holywell will remain open until such time that the new facility is established..
