Cllr Jones was born in Llanrug and still resides there. He is a slate quarryman's son and a father of two. He's thoroughly bilingual in Welsh and English.

He has served on Llanrug Community Council, Arfon Borough Council and, since 1995, on Gwynedd Council. He was Chairman of Gwynedd Council in 2004/5.
He serves on the Governing Bodies of Llanrug Primary School and Ysgol Brynrefail, Llanrug.

Before his early retirement some years ago he worked for British Telecom for 30 years. Prior to his retirement he was the Manager and Head of BT's Planning Department in North Wales.

Cllr Jones has been a lay preacher for some years, having studied Theology through the University of Gloucestershire after his retirement.

He was appointed a Member of the Authority in January 2003. He is a past Chairman of the Performance Review Committee and is one of the Authority's representative on the Force's Welsh Language Group.
