There are currently 15 Visitors covering 1 non-designated and 6 designated custody suites in North Wales.
During the period 1st April 2007 to 31st March 2008, Custody Visitors made a total number of 148 visits compared to 116 visits in 2006/07. Of the 497 persons being detained in custody at the time of the visits, 224 (45%) were unavailable to accept a visit due to a number of reasons including asleep, in interview, detainee violent or drunk.
Of the 273 detainees available to be seen, 247 (90%) consented to a visit from the Custody Visitors. Of the detainees seen 66 (27%) raised comments/issues which mainly related to food/drink, additional blankets, medical issues, and requests for visits/phone calls. In the previous year, 207 detainees were available to be seen and 151 consented to a visit.
The majority of issues raised by the detainees were resolved at the time of the visit by the Custody Officer. Any issues which cannot be resolved by the Custody Officer are referred to the Custody Manager and the Administration of Justice for consideration and appropriate action.
