Councillor Griffiths was born in Cricieth and currently lives in the village of Morfa Bychan.

He is fluent in Welsh and English. He taught for 35 years and was headteacher of Ysgol Llanbedr and Ysgol Manod, Blaenau Ffestiniog before taking early retirement.

He is a Member of Plaid Cymru and has served on Porthmadog Town Council for almost 30 years.  He was elected as a member of Gwynedd Council in 2004. As a Gwynedd Councillor, he is a member of the Main Facilities and Corporate Scrutiny Committee, the Children and Young People Scrutiny Committee, Audit Committee, Special Education Committee, Religious Education Consultation Committee and a number of sub-committees that are relevant to the Porthmadog area.

He is the current Chair of the Porthmadog Area Protection Committee which cooperates with a number of agencies for the benefit of the local community. For many years he was a member of the North Gwynedd Community Health Council and was Chair of the Committee during 2007-09. He represents the Council on a number of committees and on the North Wales Renal Network Board.

He is a member of the Governing Bodies of Ysgol Borth y Gest and Ysgol Eifionydd.

Councillor Griffiths joined the Police Authority in 2004 and is the current Chair of the Resources Committee. He represents the Authority on a number of Boards and Panels within North Wales Police.
