Independent Custody Visiting
Introduction
An Independent Custody Visiting Scheme is operated by the North Wales Police Authority. The Scheme is completely independent of the Police and helps to enhance accountability and public confidence in policing.
The purpose of the Scheme is to enable people from the local community to observe and report upon the conditions under which people are detained at Police Stations, with the aim of increasing public confidence in the fair and proper treatment of detainees by the Police.
Who are Independent Custody Visitors?
Independent Custody Visitors are unpaid volunteers appointed from the local community who make unannounced visits, in pairs, to check on the welfare of detainees in police custody.
How are Independent Custody Visitors Appointed?
Anyone wishing to apply is required to complete an application form. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a formal interview before a selection panel. Successful applicants will be required to attend induction training prior to taking up their duties and will be subject to a six month probationary period. Those appointed are issued with an official identity card.
Additional Information
On appointment Custody Visitors are required to sign a contract which forms the basis of an understanding.
Custody Visitors are paid travel expenses at agreed rates based upon the cubic capacity of the vehicle. If a Custody Visitor does not have a car then bus and/or train fares will be reimbursed.
