Preparing the Equality Plan

Following on from equality legislation introduced in October 2010, further specific duties were brought in for public bodies.  As policing is not a devolved function (i.e. it is governed from Westminster and not by the Welsh Government) all police forces including North Wales Police and Police Authority are governed by the English Specific Duties.

The regulations containing the specific duties came into force following parliamentary approval in September 2011.  Click on the link attached for more information on the specific duties regulations.

As part of our specific duties we have published information about equalities and policing in North Wales.

North Wales Police and Police Authority are continuing to work together to meet the responsibilities of the equality duty.  We took a joint approach and prepared the Equality Plan together.  The plan sets out our equality objectives over the next 4 years.  Equality objectives are the priorities that we have set in relation to issues of equality and fairness.  The Authority’s responsibility in relation to the objectives is like that of the Force, but centres around our monitoring and scrutiny role.  Performance against the objectives will be monitored regularly and reviewed annually.  Changes may be required to the objectives over time which may include adding new ones or changing the ones we have.  However, as with the objectives already set, any changes must be based on evidence.

We have carried out a number of specific tasks in the preparation of the plan.  We have published equality information relating to our business and communities, have carried out consultation and engaged with local people on policing and providing a fair policing service.
