Mr Lewis is married with one son and two daughters and is originally a native of Wrexham but has been resident in Llangollen for over 30 years.

After graduating as an aeronautical engineer he worked initially on the development of the jet engine for the Harrier jump-jet. With the decline of the British aircraft industry he obtained a post-graduate management qualification and moved into personnel management.

He eventually returned to North Wales as personnel manager for a major packaging company before joining Toyota (UK) in a senior general management role to help establish and develop their 'greenfield' engine manufacturing facility on Deeside.

Following his retirement, he served on the North Wales Probation Board and worked with the Probation Boards Association before joining the North Wales Police Authority.  After a period of Acting Chair of Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust he joined the newly formed North Wales NHS Trust as a Non-Executive Director until September 2009.

He served as Vice Chair of the Police Authority for a period of two years before being elected Chair in May 2010.
