Scheme Guidelines

This handbook has been designed to help custody visitors carry out their role of visiting police stations in North Wales to check on the welfare of persons held there and the conditions in which they are kept.

National Codes of Practice

Section 51 of the Police Reform Act 2002 requires Police Authorities to have an Independent Custody Visitors Scheme. The Home Secretary has issued a Code of Practice and Police Authorities and Custody Visitors must have regard to the Code in carrying out their functions.

Volunteer Policy

The Police Authority has developed a Volunteer Policy as part of its commitment to its Independent Custody Visiting Scheme. It is important that we are able to maintain an agreed standard of service to our communities and it is also important that volunteers should enjoy making their contribution to this service.

From time to time the Police Authority seeks to recruit more volunteer Independent Custody Visitors. Details will be published in the local media and on our website.
